Oak Hill defeats Northfield

Story by: Scott Dubois—

Whew!! Oak Hill made a frantic comeback to edge Northfield 42-40 in girls basketball at Mier Friday night.
In a matchup where the visiting girls from Northfield dressed only 11 players total for both the varsity and junior varsity combined, Oak Hill appeared they might be able to use their size and depth advantage. The Lady Norsemen had other ideas in the first quarter as they use good ball handling and outside shooting to take a 12-8 lead at the end of the first period. The Northfield momentum continued into the second quarter as they expanded their lead to 22-12 before the Golden Eagles closed with a five point spurt to shave the deficit to 22-17 at the halftime break.
In the second half Northfield maintained their single digit lead until a basket by sophomore Kelcie Thompson pushed the Norse lead to 38-30 with 3:46 to go in the game. At this point the Oak Hill defense took over control of the game. The Eagles would use turnovers and missed free throws to erase lead and tie the game 40 with less than 20 seconds to go and possession of the ball. Following an Oak Hill timeout, the Eagles got the ball inside to freshman Taylor Westgate who was fouled. She proceeded to sink both clutch free throws to seal the 42-40 victory. Sophomore Jenessa Hasty led a blanced scoring attack 11 points while fellow sophomores Kaela Robey and Adrianna Trexler contributed nine each. Westgate also grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Sophomore Ariel Dale paced Northfield with 111 points.
In the junior varsity game Oak Hill won 41-34.
Oak Hill, whose record moves to 3-0 on the season travels to Taylor on Tuesday. Northfield drops to a 1-1 record and will host Eastbrook on Wednesday night.
