Oak Hill cruised to an easy 82-48 win over Wabash in the season opener in boys’ basketball action Wednesday night at Wabash.
In the first quarter both teams showed signs of opening night jitters as no points were scored in the first two and a half minutes, before Oak Hill, the 4th ranked team in 2A, went on a 9-0. Wabash struggled in the period with the Golden Eagles’ full court press that fueled a 23-10 lead capped by junior Spencer Ballinger’s half court shot! The Apaches continued to be stymied by the Eagles height leading to more easy baskets for the visitors in route to a 41-21 halftime advantage.
Wabash attempted to make the contest more of a half court game in the third quarter and turned their best offensive effort with 17 points. Oak Hill junior Tyce Frank had an answer for the Apaches tossing in 12 points of his own. His scoring outburst helped the Eagles increase their lead to 61-38 going to the last period. The depth of the Golden Eagles was evident in the fourth quarter as all 10 players on the roster scored. This depth allowed Oak Hill to secure the 82-48 triumph over the Apaches. The victos had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. Junior Caleb Middlesworth paced the Eagles with 16 points followed by Frank with 15 points, Ballinger, 13 points and junior David Arens, 12 points. Middleworth also grabbed 11 rebounds and Frank handed out seven assists. Juniors Luke Mattern and Austin Vinapol led Wabash in scoring with 16 and 12 points respectively.
Wabash won the junior varsity contest 47-41. Sophomore Landry Ozmun was the leading Oak Hill scorer with 10 points. Oak Hill was victorious in the “C” team game behind freshman Taj Johnson’s 13 points.
Oak Hil improves to 1-0 and will host Manchester on Saturday evening. Wabash drops to 0-1 to start the season and will travel to Madison Grant on Saturday.
