The Marion boys soccer team came back from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits and scored twice just 25 seconds apart in overtime to catch and win 4-3 at Anderson Monday night.
Sophomore RJ Macomber had all four goals for the Giants.
“He’s really coming into his own,” said Jorge Berry, Marion’s head coach, “Four goals–you can’t say much other than that.”
Although Marion dominated play throughout the first half, they led by just a 1-0 score at the break.
“We’ve been able to create a lot of opportunities all season, but it’s just finishing them.” said Berry, “We should have been up probably 3-0 at the end of the first half, if not more.”
Anderson took advantage and scored twice in rapid succession early in the second half on goals by Stuart Erny and Bryler Hamm to take a 2-1 lead.
The Giants were trying to run an offside trap and got caught flat. “Trying to is the right way to put it,” said Berry.
Marion refused to fold. “The guys came back, they were resilient, they didn’t quit, and that’s what we’re about,” said Berry.
Macomber scored his second goal halfway through the second half and it stayed tied 2-2 into the first overtime.
Just over a minute into the first of two seven-minute overtime periods, it was Erny striking again for the Indians to make it 3-2.
That set up Macomber’s heroics. With 2:22 left in the second overtime period, he tallied from the top of the penalty area. Then, with 1:57 left he did it again.
