Marion football coach resigns

Vermilion resigns as MHS football coach

MARION — Marion High School head football coach Ryan Vermilion has submitted his resignation as coach to Marion Community Schools officials, saying the change will allow him to spend more time with his family.

“This past year has opened my eyes to the fact that my family is greatly impacted by the emotions of a football season. I have spent many years helping other people’s children, and it is now time for me to step back and spend more time with my own children at a very important developmental stage in their life,” he said in his resignation letter.

The resignation will not be officially accepted until the next School Board meeting. Vermilion will continue as an MCS employee, and will transition to a new role at Marion High School for the remainder of the year.

“I have worked hard to make positive changes in this program, and although they may not have shown on the field, they will pay major dividends down the road,” he said.

The 1992 graduate of MHS was head coach of the Giants football team for three seasons. He was previously an assistant coach at Marion on and off for 10 years. He also served as head football coach in Winchester and Edinburgh. He played on the 1990 semi-state champion Giants team, and he also played football at Butler University.

“We appreciate Coach Vermilion’s dedication to Marion and our student-athletes during his time here,” Athletic Director Jamy Bechler said. “This is a testament to Coach Vermilion’s character that he’d make this decision now. He has worked hard the last few years to build the program. He is a true Marion Giant, having been a star player and a coach here, and I know that this decision wasn’t easy for him or his family.”

Vermilion expressed hope that the program’s next coach can be brought in quickly.

“I am and always will be a Giant. I will never stop supporting this program,” Vermilion said. “I truly believe the philosophy that if you build the man, the championships will come. That takes time and needs many great people involved. I want to thank the board, the principals, the ADs, and my staff for their help in the past years.”
