Southwood ended the volleyball season of Oak Hill 3-0 scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-15 in a semifinal match of the Class 2A volleyball sectional at Southwood High school Saturday afternoon.
The Knights jumped in front in the first set at 8-4 before the Golden Eagles crawled back to within two points at 13-11. Oak Hill battled to stay within striking distance at 19-14 behind the kills of seniors Christina Webb and Toni Lautzenheiser. Southwood then ran off six of the eight points led by the dominant performance of senior Emily Harnish to close out the first game 25-16.
The Eagles would start the second game like the first one, falling behind the home team again 6-2. Oak Hill would battle back to within a single point before Southwood used a four point surge to go ahead 10-5. The Eagles proved they didn’t want their season to end by mounting a 13-10 run to close to 20-18. The Knights would not be denied using the powerful hitting of junior Ashley Parsons to prevail 25-21.
In the final set Southwood moved ahead 3-0 before Oak Hill evened the score at 3. The Knights appeared to be taking control of the game 10-6, but again the Golden Eagle girls fought back to draw to a 11-10 deficit. Southwood then captured final control of the match with a 10-1 run on route to the 25-15 win.
Oak Hill finishes their season with a 12-19 record. Southwood improves their record to 20-15 and advances to the sectional final against Rochester at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
