Visiting Mississinewa stunned Oak Hill 34-14 in CIC high school football action Friday night.
The Indians opened the scoring on the night with a 1 yard run by sophomore quarterback Cade McCoin with 7:44 to go in the first quarter. The score was set up by a long punt return by freshman Heisman Skeens to the Oak Hill 12 yard line. Senior kicker Joshua Walton added the extra point to make the score 7-0.
In the second quarter the Golden Eagles went on a 85 yard 12 play scoring march of their own capped off by the five yard scoring run of junior quarterback Adam McDivitt with 5:26 to go in the half. Junior kicker Henry Ollman’s PAT made the score 7-7. The visitors from Gas City regained the lead a short time later on a big 50 yard touchdown pass from McCoin to senior wide receiver Gabriel Retz with only :53 remaining in the first half. Walton again converted the PAT to make the score 14-7. Following the Mississinewa kickoff, Oak Hill fumbled on an exchange from and senior fullback Joel Durkes and the Indians recovered the ball at the Oak Hill 26 yard line. Two plays later McCoin scored his second TD on a 1 yard plunge with nine seconds to go on the clock. The score was set up by a 25 yard connection from McCoin to junior receiver Kody Cowgill. Walton booted his third extra point to make the halftime score 21-7.
The Indians received the second half kickoff and rumbled down the field on a 12 play 80 yard scoring drive to start the third quarter. Mississinewa was able to control the ball and chew over six minutes behind their massive offensive line and the running of junior Coston Ormsby who scored a TD on a 7 yard scamper. Walton’s conversion failed and the score remained 27-7. The Eagles responded on their next possession with a 60 yard drive finished by Durkes’ 19 yard TD run. With Ollmann’s extra point the score was 27-14 with 1:49 to go in the third quarter.
The final quarter belonged to the Mississinewa defense that shut out the final 12 minutes and created two interceptions by McDivitt. Ormsby concluded the scoring with a 36 yard touchdown dash with 2:50 to go in the game. Walton split the uprights to make the final score 34-14.
Mississinewa, who improves their record to 5-3 and 4-2 in the CIC, will host Frankton next Friday to end the regular season. Oak Hill drops to 6-2 and 4-2 in the CIC and will take on Madison Grant at home in their season finale.
