Area high school football got underway this week, with scrimmages in preparation for season openers next week. Two Grant County teams squared off Friday night as Marion went to Eastbrook.
In the first series of controlled scrimmage, each team ran 15 plays, starting at their own 35 yard line. Eastbrook’s defense kept Marion out of the end zone, limiting the Giants to two runs of ten-plus yards by Keiron Sanders and a couple pass completions by Giant’s quarterback Lorenzo Trevino.
On it’s first offensive series, Eastbook put the ball in the end zone on runs by Peyton Watson and Andrew Barajas. Luke Elliott and Brendan Wallace also had runs of ten yards or more.
Each Team began it’s second offensive series at the other team’s 10 yard line and ran 10 plays. Eastbrook’s offense continued to click, with Watson scoring two TD’s and Elliott and Barajas punching it in once each, too. Eastbrook’s defense held Marion to one trip to the end zone.
The third offensive series began at the 35 yard line again; each team had 12 plays. The Giant offense came alive when it went to the passing game, scoring five times on passes from Trevino to Zavier Fuller (twice), Darrick Jones (twice), and Marcus Smith. Marion’s defense stiffened, holding Eastbrook to two scores, a run by Barajas and a pass from Jackson Liddick to Nathan Mosier.
The Giant’s regular season opens next Friday (August 21) at Huntington North. The Panthers travel to Norwell for their season opener the same night.
